Movie Recap

On the way to their new home, Chihiro and her parents take a wrong turn and stumble into the Bathhouse—a dazzlingly busy world, yet laced with an eerie sense of dread. Lured by gluttony, Chihiro’s parents transform into pigs.

In truth, everyone who doesn’t work in that place meets the same fate: turned into pigs, fattened up, then slaughtered and eaten. To avoid this grim end, one must beg the witch Yubaba, the ruler of the bathhouse, for work and sign a contract. But in doing so, she steals your true name.

Ogino Chihiro becomes simply “Sen.”

Over time, people forget who they once were. They lose themselves entirely. Like Kamaji, the boiler man—he stokes the fires with his eight arms, yet still can’t keep up. A swarm of soot sprites toil endlessly, hauling lumps of coal.

Everyone moves in a rush, mechanical and hollow. You can hardly see any expressions from the people there, except for fawning smiles aimed at wealthy guests and silent dread in the presence of No-Face, who begins to consume others.

Those who forget their names can never leave the bathhouse. Only those who remember who they truly are have a chance to escape.

Chihiro clings tightly to her name, guarding it with care. Through hardship and danger, she rescues her parents—and finds the way out.
