He has made everything beautiful in its time. Ecclesiastes 3:11
Toy Story 3 tells the story of Andy preparing to leave for college, while his beloved toys are accidentally sent to a daycare center that appears cheerful on the surface but hides a much darker reality. As they try to escape, the toys work together and face tests of friendship, betrayal, and trust. In the end, Andy lovingly passes them on to a new owner, Bonnie, who cherishes them—giving them a new beginning.
The daycare’s uneasy atmosphere is largely due to Lotso the bear, also known as Lotso Huggin’ Bear. He once belonged to a little girl named Daisy, who loved him dearly. But one day, during a family outing, Daisy accidentally left Lotso behind. After a long and difficult journey home, he discovered that she had already replaced him with a new bear—an event that shattered his sense of love and belonging. From that point on, Lotso lost his trust in love. Growing cold and controlling, he turned the daycare into a prison for the other toys.
In Toy Story 2, we saw Jessie respond to her own abandonment by emotionally shutting down—she withdrew and avoided forming new relationships. Lotso, on the other hand, didn’t retreat; he became domineering and manipulative. Hurt people hurt people. It makes me think: the next time I encounter someone who is withdrawn, or someone who lashes out, perhaps there are deep, unhealed wounds behind their behavior—stories I know nothing about. Maybe that’s why God calls us to love, not to judge.
“Mercy triumphs over judgment.” (James 2:13)
At the end of the film, Woody has to say goodbye to Andy as he enters a new chapter of life. That moment reminded me of many goodbyes in my own life—especially when I left China decades ago to study in Canada. I remember saying goodbye to my parents at the airport, feeling both sad and fear of the unknown. Back then, I didn’t know God.
Now, as my own children leave home for school, I send them off with two Bible verses. Knowing that God is with them wherever they go brings me true peace:
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9)
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5–6)
